How Best To Serve Yam and It's Benefits



Yam is a culturally important food in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa like in Nigeria and Ghana where festivals celebrating the cultural and culinary importance of yam take place annually.


Igbo call it ”íri ji” 

Yams are not only an excellent source of fiber but also high in Potassium which is the third most abundant mineral in the body. 


”It helps the body regulate fluid, send nerve signals and regulate muscle contractions.  and manganese, which are important for supporting bone health, growth, metabolism, and heart function”.

These tubers also provide adequate percentages of other micronutrients, such as copper and vitamin C.
”Copper” is vital for red blood cell production and iron absorption, while ”vitamin C” is a strong antioxidant that can boost your immune system.


How To Prepare Yam


  1. Wash and peel yams then cut into bite-size cubes or sliced.
  2. Fill the pot with just enough salted water to cover the yams and add a dash of salt.
  3. Boil for about 15 - 25 minutes if diced in cubes or sliced, choice.

Kitchen Tip: For extra tasty flavor, you can season the water with salt or ny choice cooking seasonings. 

Cooked yams can be served as they are or drizzled with oil. 

You can also serve with a sauce; vegetables or egg as a side dish, meat or fish is secondary).
