The Golden Dome: Why the United States Will Surely Take Greenland

By Chinedu Nnanweuba:

If you look at a world map, you’ll see that geographically, Greenland is part of North America, even though it is politically governed by Denmark.

The distance between Canada and Greenland is just about 26 km, while the distance between Greenland and Denmark is about 3,000 km.

The primary reason President Donald Trump is interested in Greenland is strategic. The Golden Dome under consideration is designed to cover all of North America - the United States, Canada, and potentially Mexico.

Since Greenland is physically close to Canada and the United States, it makes little sense for Canada to be fully protected while Greenland is left out as a loophole for missile or hypersonic attacks.

A missile defense system only makes sense if it can detect and repel threats as early as possible, ideally before they reach Canada, let alone the United States.

That is why Greenland is critical.

The Golden Dome is a next-generation U.S. missile defense shield, similar in concept to Israel’s Iron Dome, but far more powerful, global, and strategic, designed to counter long-range and hypersonic threats.

Canada and Mexico would likely pay the United States to be covered under the Golden Dome. Greenland, however, has a population of only about 56,000 people, meaning it would not pay, and Denmark would almost certainly not pay either.

So even if Denmark allows the United States to build and operate Golden Dome infrastructure over Greenland at no cost, Greenland would, in practical terms, already fall under U.S. defense control in principle.

Here is what I think would happen:

Greenland remains politically part of Denmark on paper, but the United States takes full control of Greenland’s defense.
