Today on the floor of the Senate, a bill "Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education Owerri" (Establishment, ETC) BILL, 2017 (SB.398) which I Sponsored passed through it's second reading today. The bill subsequently was referred to Senate Committee on TETFUND and Tertiary Education for further legislative action.
This bill when eventually passed into law will give a legal framework to the full upgrade of the institution to a Federal University and no longer college of Education. By this status, the University will be able to award degrees independent of the initial affiliation to University of Nigeria Nssukka.
